President of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology
10th President Joon Oh Park
Dear Distinguished members of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO),
Hello. I am Joon Oh Park, the 10th President of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology. First of all, my deepest gratitude goes to all former presidents and board members for their dedications to our society. I will be striving myself to further advance for KSMO to build on their dedicated efforts.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of KSMO in 2025, we have taken the lead in improving the quality of care for cancer patients, and the level of oncology in Korea through active academic exchange among members, and with successful international collaborations. Our society has played an important role in multidisciplinary integrated cancer care and precision medicine. Many of our members, who are experts in medical oncology, have significantly contributed as physician-scientists and clinical researchers, achieving remarkable results. We have also actively participated in establishing standard cancer treatment guidelines, introducing the latest cancer-related systems, and contributing to policy formulation, greatly enhancing public health.
Notably, through programs such as "Chemotherapy Awareness Day" and KSMO YouTube channel “KSMOTV: That’s Cancer,” we have strived to provide accurate information and knowledge about chemotherapy and cancer treatment for the patients, families, and the public, fostering closer communication.
Building on 20 years of successful experience, we are now preparing for a more innovative future over the next 20 years.
1. Enhancing International Collaboration and Academic Exchange: Researching and introducing new treatments is crucial for advancing cancer care. Through hosting international conferences and fostering global networks, we will stay abreast of the latest trends and knowledge in oncology, setting global standards for cancer treatment in the era of the fourth industrial revolution and precision medicine. We will establish a research committee to prepare for future key research topics, enhancing our role as a leading society in clinical oncology in Asia and strengthening our global network.
2. Cultivating the Next Generation of Oncology Experts: To instill pride and identity in young medical oncologists, we will offer opportunities to attend various international conferences and develop comprehensive programs for continuous education and mentoring. This will help cultivate future oncology leaders and drive the sustainable growth of our society.
3. Creating a New Environment and Culture for Cancer Treatment: We will strengthen promotional and educational programs that directly communicate with cancer patients to provide accurate knowledge and information about cancer treatment. Additionally, we will actively participate in the decision-making process of cancer-related health policies, fulfilling our society's social responsibility.
4. Enhancing Academic and Operational Systems of the Society: We will develop our academic activities, membership management, and overall operational systems into stable and efficient models to ensure the sustainability and continuity of our society's operations.
Your continuous support and active participation are the driving forces behind our society's growth. Together with the 10th leadership, I look forward to creating a better future despite the challenging medical environment.
Thank you.
9th Board of Directors’ Chair Joong-bae Ahn
The KSMO, founded in 2005, is a relatively young society, inaugurated only 17 years old and not yet in its prime. Despite this brief period, the society has undergone significant changes, including a name change from the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology to the Korean Society of Medical Oncology, and subsequently officially joined the Korean Medical Association as a member society. Among our many achievements, our official journal, Cancer Research and Treatment, has evolved into an outstanding journal with an impact factor of 4.679 in 2020. In addition, in 2021, we had the opportunity to participate in, as an associated society, the ESMO Open published by the European Society of Medical Oncology, which has an impact factor of 6.540.
In recent years, KSMO has experienced dramatic growth and change. Starting from 2019, we held international conferences, which became the foundation for the future evolution of KSMO. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019 brought forth the challenges of a ‘new normal’ era, forcing us to adapt and host our conferences in a novel format. Nevertheless, KSMO was able to successfully adapt to the new ‘untact’ era, conducting sophisticated online and hybrid conferences.
This growth and development would not have been possible without the immense dedication and efforts of our past presidents, chairs, board of directors, and the unwavering support of our members since KSMO's inception. At this crucial juncture, I am humbled by the enormous responsibility of serving as president.
In order to continue the growth we've experienced thus far and ensure stable progress, we need a period for consolidation of our foundations. As we grow, it is crucial for us to establish a system that matches our advancement. I will strive to continue the system development efforts initiated by our previous chairs.
The society will work to actively further promote the role of medical oncologists in cancer treatment to patients and the general public. I believe that we need to build a public relations strategy tailored to diverse demographics to accomplish this. I will strive to reinforce International Affairs to fulfill the mission and vision that KSMO has outlined for 2032, take a leading role in multidisciplinary treatment and precision medicine, and encourage outstanding professionals in the field to join the society.
The board, including myself, will do our best during this term. However, our members remain the mainstay of our society. We eagerly anticipate hearing the diverse opinions of the members of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology. Through this, we believe that KSMO can progress in the direction expected by our members. It is only possible to overcome numerous challenges and achieve our goals when all our members unite together as one and actively support the society's work.
I wish all of our members and their families continued health and happiness. Thank you.

Let me start by welcoming all visitors to the Korean Society of Medical Oncology website.
The year 2020 marked the 15th anniversary of the Korean Society of Medical Oncology, established with the goal of pursuing multidisciplinary integrated care and education in the field of cancer. While much remains to be done, our society has become a leader in the field of oncology thanks to the active participation of our members. The last two years in particular have been a period of dazzling growth.
In 2019, we hosted our first international conference, which was attended by over 1,200 oncology experts from 34 countries, marking a successful accomplishment of vibrant academic activities and exchanges. Additionally, we formed a precision cancer medicine networking group encompassing education, research, and clinical practice, thereby moving a step closer towards the implementation of precision medicine demanded by the times. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the former executive boards and members who have sought out such remarkable outcomes.
Based on these achievements, we aim to grow further and inspire additional trust as a leading oncology society through the following objectives:
1. We will enhance education and research in precision medicine to expand its application in clinical practice.
2. As novel therapeutics and multidisciplinary treatment are introduced into cancer treatment, providing accurate information and actively participating in government policy making has become ever more crucial. We will strengthen our public relations efforts so that cancer patients can easily access reliable information.
3. We will strive to provide clinical guidelines for cancer patients and the general public based on scholarly exchanges among experts in the field.
4. We will make efforts to reflect our treatment standards in public health policies.
5. Through these internal and external activities, we will contribute to improving treatment outcomes for cancer patients in Korea.
Furthermore, our members are the core of our society. We will provide various platforms for academic exchange for KSMO members to conveniently keep pace with the digital age. Oncology remains a rapidly advancing field. We wish to expand education programs for young researchers to establish themselves as experts in oncology. We will strive to make the Korean Society of Medical Oncology a leader in Asian cancer research and treatment, based on the success of our international conferences.
I pledge that all directors of the executive board will do their best to achieve these goals. In turn,, we ask for your active participation and interest.
Thank you.

We endeavor to build a cancer care system that aligns with the era of precision medicine and to further solidify the role of oncology.
In the field of oncology, there have been dazzling changes recently with the introduction of immune anticancer drugs and genome-based precision medicine. The Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO), despite having a brief history of 13 years since its foundation in 2005, has secured its place as one of the leading academic societies in the country, thanks to the passionate participation and dedication of over 1,000 members who have joined forces to nurture the growth of the society. KSMO’s international stature is also rising on a continual basis.
This progress is the result of the dedicated efforts of our past presidents, chair, executive boards, and the active participation and support of all our members. I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my gratitude for your support. I am also honored to have been chosen lead the KSMO as chair for the next two years.
Based on our past growth, I will strive to build a cancer treatment system that aligns with the era of precision medicine and to further solidify the role of oncology. To achieve this, I will continue to expand opportunities for member participation. Currently, there are many society members faithfully fulfilling their roles in the 10 committees within KSMO. While widening participation in existing committees, KSMO will also work to establish a range of new committees that align with the new era, pooling your collective experience and wisdom.
We will also commit ourselves to international exchanges and globalization, striving to make our association a leading oncology society in Asia. Alongside this, to fulfill our role as oncology specialists in the era of precision medicine, we will continuously provide opportunities for education and training in precision medicine, and aim to serve as a policy partner for the government in crafting appropriate healthcare policies. Finally, as a trusted academic organization for cancer patients, we will strive to provide accurate information and education about cancer.
As you may already have heard, KSMO recently changed its name from the "Korean Association for Clinical Oncology (KACO)" to the "Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO)" in accordance with the recommendation of the Korean Medical Association. This change in name reflects our commitment to more faithfully represent the field of oncology. However, it does not detract from the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care that the society has pursued so far; instead, it will allow us to further expand opportunities for exchange and cooperation. The KSMO is a society that you, our valued members, continue to build and develop. To that end, I request your active participation and support.
6th Board of Directors’ Chair Young-hyeok Lim
Looking back at the last 10 years, I am grateful to our members who have entrusted me with the great responsibility that comes with my appointment as the 6th president of KSMO. Despite its relatively short history of just over 10 years, our society has contributed to improving the quality of cancer patient care by promoting the spread of integrated multidisciplinary treatment and research through the efforts of cancer experts in diverse fields.
Moving forward, KSMO will strive to provide the best possible treatment for cancer patients through the quick and accurate delivery of medical information to our members in the rapidly changing medical environment characterized by the era of precision medicine and big data. Furthermore, we will strive to grow as a leading society both domestically and internationally through active information exchanges and research cooperation through networking both at home and abroad. I believe that it is vital for KSMO to develop a model where all members can participate and develop together, nurture young members, and serve as a center for lifelong education.
In order to ensure that cancer patients reap the benefits of the society’s initiatives effectively and substantially we will actively promote expert opinions to the government and health authorities, as well as cooperate with health authorities to play a significant role in establishing health policies. We will also make cancer education more widely available to the general public and make proactive efforts at cancer prevention. I believe this may be our contribution to society as cancer specialists and members of KSMO.
For the past 10 years, our society has developed thanks to the relentless efforts of all members and past executive boards. We will strive to make KSMO a society that can continue to develop, becoming "the most trusted academic society" and "a society that makes its members proud to be part of the KSMO". Ultimately, we will endeavor to create “a society that can make significant contributions to improving the treatment outcomes of cancer patients.” The executive board, including myself, will strive to make this happen and we ask for your active support and participation. Thank you.
5th Board of Directors’ Chair Hyun-cheol Jung
Hello.
Respected members of the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology (KACO) and visitors,
Over the past decade, I am pleased to think that cancer experts from various fields centered around the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology have worked diligently to advance multidisciplinary treatment and research. Based on these efforts, I will continue to promote the unique role of the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology in carrying out the social responsibilities of cancer experts in each field for the best personalized treatment for cancer patients.
The future emerges like a thief and disappears without a trace. Interwoven expertise creates new trends through networks, making international networking and globalization of the association's mission a necessary rite of passage. I ask for your participation and cooperation in helping the association to think globally and act locally through the convergence of our imaginations.
The association’s most important role is fostering all of its members into human talent. The Talmud records that God created mothers to care for children because he could not be everywhere all at once. The association will do its best to take on a maternal role as a lifelong education venue where all members acquire professional knowledge and share experiences and wisdom, as well as the role of a bluebird that conveys hope to cancer patients and their families.
Learning widely and studying deeply is an attempt to reach a highly abstract realm where you can explain everything concisely, exhibiting true master of your chosen subject area. In the ever-changing 21st century, we must join hands and work together to foster an association that nurtures internationally-minded scholars of the highest calibre who boast expertise in multidisciplinary fields, compete with other experts in the field, and free patients from their fear of cancer.”
4th Board of Directors’ Chair Dong-buk Shin
Hello.
Respected members of the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology (KACO) and visitors,
Founded in 2005, our society has grown into an organization of over 750 members in less than a decade, comprising specialists and oncology nurses in a diverse range of disciplines such as hematology oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all our members, and especially to the past directors who have spared no effort or passion to make KACO what it is today.
While endeavoring to maintain and develop the fundamental activities of the association, we also strive to promote a nationwide understanding of multidisciplinary integrated care, an advanced system that provides optimal personalized treatment for cancer patients. International exchanges in each field have been commonplace for a long time. However, to garner support and gather strength for KACO to step beyond national boundaries and develop into an international society, we need the active participation of our members.
The environment surrounding us, as we strive to properly fulfill our roles, is indeed very challenging. We can only overcome these difficulties and accomplish our goals when all our members unite as one and actively support the work of the associaition. To enhance your trust in KACO, we commit to expanding the channels through which your opinions can be heard, and promise to do our utmost to implement your suggestions.
Your continued encouragement and support are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
